Birch Run Boys Varsity Basketball lost in the first round of district play 48-62 to Clio Monday at Mt.Morris. The Panthers held a slight edge (12-11) at the end of the first. However, we went cold in the 2nd quarter and trailed at halftime 18-32. The third quarter didn't go well for us either (getting outscored 7-15) with the score at 25-47 in favor of Clio by the end of the third. We gained some momentum and scored 23 points in the fourth compared to Clio's 15 points, but Clio's lead was insurmountable for the amount of time remaining. We picked a bad night to go cold, shooting 39% (13-33) from the 2 point range, and 15% (4-26) from the 3 point arc. (Clio, on the other hand, shot 65% from the 2 point range and 46% on 3's.) I feel bad for the team because we worked very hard, but couldn't get the ball to fall as was needed to get the win. It was a tough night and disappointing especially for the group of eight seniors.Yet they can be proud of all their efforts. Birch Run Boys Basketball won our final season game at home on Senior Night (Friday) beating Swan Valley 74- 63 in overtime!  It was a hard fought game, and an exciting win for the Panthers, who left it all on the court! We had a slow start and were trailing 9-12 after the first quarter, but came back in the 2nd- hitting three 3-pointers (along with 3- 2's and 5 free-throws) to take a 30-25 lead into halftime. The third quarter we had a scoring drought and midway through the third- the Vikings tied the score at 32 each. The Vikings hit four 3's of their own in the third and took a 44-38 lead into the fourth. We battled it out in the final quarter of regulation and were down 3 points (59-62)  with just 10.2 seconds remaining when Jaxon Martinus in-bounded the ball under our own basket. The ball was passed around the 3-point arc until it reached Colton Elliott who swished a 3-pointer from the corner to go into overtime at 62 all with just 4 seconds remaining! Swan Valley then took a half-court shot after quickly in-bounding  the ball, but it missed its mark, which sent the game into overtime.We scored 12 points in overtime compared to Swan Valley's 1 point to secure the 74-63 win. Gage and Jaxon Martinus both had an outstanding game. Gage led the way, having a "double-double" with 20 points and 17 rebounds! He also hit all of his free-throws, making 6-6 for the night (hitting 4 of them in overtime). Jaxon Martinus scored 19 points, had 5 rebounds, and 6 assists! Connor Mausolf led the team with 4 steals and had 4 deflections. Keegan Hale also had 4 deflections. Each of our 8 seniors (Alex Chase, Trent Dalak, Colton Elliott, Keegan Hale, Gage Martinus, Jaxon Martinus, Connor Mausolf, and Christian Stebner) scored tonight! It was great team win to end the regular season. Birch Run varsity boys couldn't keep pace with Alma's hot shooting @ Alma losing 47-72 Tuesday. Alma out-scored Birch Run 37-13 by the half. The BR Panthers, however, picked up the intensity in the 3rd quarter to out-score Alma (25 to 20) to end the 3rd quarter @ 38- 57.Birch Run was able to close the deficit a by 4 more points in the 4th, but fell short -losing the contest 47-72. Birch Run won a nail-biter 67- 62 in overtime against host Bridgeport Friday. The game went back and forth with Birch Run taking the 1st quarter 16-12. However, Bridgeport came back in the second quarter to whittle away the Panther lead, and took a  5-point (34-29) halftime lead into the locker-room. In the middle of the 3rd quarter Birch Run saw itself down by 11 points. But the Panthers went on a tremendous 9-0 run to end the 3rd quarter down by only 4 points (45-49)- thanks in big part to Trent Dalak making 7straight points for the Panthers, and Jaxon Martinus making a 2-point conversion to end the 3rd. The 4th quarter saw back and forth lead changes, and after Bridgeport missed a 3-point shot in the last seconds of regulation we went into overtime tied at 57. In overtime, Jaxon Martinous helped seal the victory making a 2-point bucket and going 6-8 from the free-throw line.Connor Mausolf also shot 2-2 from the free throw line in overtime. It was an exciting and well-deserved (67-62) win for the Panthers! Jaxon Maritnus led Birch Run with 21 points, while he and Gage Martinus each had 8 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals. We got a slow start, getting down 9-0 right from the start, but picked up our scoring and game to bring it to 28-33 at halftime (Kearsley's lead).The Panthers, however,  scored just 7 points in the third quarter compared to 31 Hornet points to make the difference in the outcome of the game. Jaxon Martinus led in scoring with 17 points. Freeland's hot shooting and height was too much for Birch Run to overcome Friday @ Freeland, losing the contest 56-86, though the Panthers played as tough has they could throughout the game. Birch Run varsity boys gave it all they had at Frankenmuth, but took a 39-52 loss Tuesday.  Frankenmuth led at the end of the 1st quarter 12-7, but Birch Run closed the gap a little by halftime 22-25. Both teams scored 9 points in the 3rd quarter making it 34-32in favor of the Eagles. With 5:30 to go in the fourth, Frankenmuth held a 2 point advantage (38-36), and with 1:29 left in the game it was 46-39 before the Panthers had to foul putting the Eagles on the free-throw line. It is nice to see Birch Run Panthers being very competitive with quality basketball programs, and would have been great to pull out the win, but I think going into overtime on Monday (the night before) affected our play near the end of the game. Birch Run Boys varsity team gave it's best effort against a hot-shooting Essexville Garber team on Friday, but lost 65-30, though they were in it much of the game. Birch Run was down 8-13 after the 1st quarter, and going into halftime was down by 7, (17-24). Garber stretched their lead to 15 points in the 3rd quarter (21- 36). Birch Run overcame a slow start before exploding in the 4th quarter with a 33 to 14 run to secure the 79-55 win over host Byron Tuesday.  The Panthers had good looks throughout the game, but couldn't connect from the outside until the 4th quarter. We played with a lot of intensity on defense throughout the game!  Jaxon Martinus had a career-high 39 points along with 9 assists, 7 steals, 8 deflections and 6 rebounds (3-way tie). The BR Varsity Boys played hard, but lost to John Glenn Friday 35-58. The Panthers battled hard and out-hustled the Bobcats, but couldn't overcome a poor shooting night and John Glenn's size advantage on the inside game. At half-time we were down 7 points (15-22), and at the end of the 3rd, down by 11 (40-29). We were in it through much of the game, and I like the intensity on defense the team is playing with right now. Some times the final score doesn't reflect how close the game was. Birch Run Boys played their hearts out Monday, but lost to Alma 62-66 in overtime. It was an exciting game and the Panthers gave an outstanding effort in the contest that went into overtime on a 2- point basket made by Gage Marintinus in the waning seconds of regulation. The Panthers were behind by 2 points (15-17) at the end of the 1st quarter, by 3 at halftime (25-28), and by 10 at the end of the third (39-49). But the Panthers outscored Alma in the fourth to bring the game to a 55-55 tie at the end of regulation. We were so close and had our chances, but came up a little short in overtime. Birch Run varsity boys battled Swan Valley Friday, and despite falling behind in the first quarter 13 to 2 out-scored Swan Valley in the 2nd quarter 17 to 8. The Vikings still held a 2-point edge (21-19) going into halftime, and had a run- putting them up by 15 points In the middle of the 3rd quarter. Birch Run Boys Varsity Basketball team got a nice win over visiting Bridgeport 55-45 Monday. The Panthers worked hard through four tough quarters while having intense ball pressure on them. But, we held our composure to pull out the win! It seemed great to beat Bridgeport, but we still have a lot of work ahead of us to improve our game, to become more consistent and fundamentally sound in every game.  The Panther's leading scorer was Christian Stebner with 12 points, followed by Jaxon Martinus and Wyatt Stevens who scored 10 points each. The Birch Run Panthers came out strong in the first half to take a 15 point (33-18) lead into halftime, but Mt. Morris edged back to pull within 8 points (40-48) by the end of the third quarter, and both teams had 61 points at the end of regulation to force an overtime. Overtime was hard fought as was the game, but Mt.Morris had the advantage at the free-throw line- hitting 18 of 32, while Birch Run shot 9 for 19 for the night from the charity stripe. We had too many turnovers tonight and our defense dropped off in the second half. We played hard, but we have to make better decisions, and keep working to improve our overall game. Birch Run varsity boys basketball suffer another loss on Tuesday to Hemlock 57-42. The Panthers played with a lot of effort against a much taller opponent inside the paint. Hemlock took advantage of its height in the 4th quarter going inside for a 19 to 8 run to close out game. Keegan Hale led the Panther scoring with 11 points followed by Trent Dalak with 10 points. Birch Run varsity boys played hard in a defensive battle through four tough quarters before losing 46 to 38 to host Essexville Garber Friday night. The Panthers played tremendous defense only to come up a little short on offense. Birch Run took the 1st quarter 16-9, 2nd quarter went to Garber who out-scored Birch Run 11 to 3 for a 20-19 one point advantage going into the half. By the end of the 3rd quarter Garber led 27 to 25. The game was hard fought and with just 17 seconds remaining Garber held a 42-38 edge before we had to start fouling to stop the clock.Garber went 8 for 9 on their free throws in the 4th quarter and 12-15 for the night.Though we didn't get the win, I am really proud of the effort the Panthers put forth; they left it all on the court! Jaxon Martinus was high scorer for the Panthers with 14 points, followed by Gage Martinus and Christian Stebner with 7 points each. Birch Run boys came up on the losing end at Millington Tuesday 64-47. BR missed many opportunities to score inside and out; both teams struggled scoring in the first half of the game. Millington led 7 to 6 after the first quarter, and at the half it was Millington with the 20-14 advantage. Birch Run's shooting woes continued in second half as Millington out scored BR 25 to 20 - taking a 11 point (45-34) lead into the 4th quarter and built on that lead for the 64 to 47 win. The Panthers gave a good effort all night, but our offense just wasn't clicking and we couldn't get any momentum going. Jaxon Martinus lead the scoring with 13 points followed by Trent Dalak with 10 points. Jaxon also led the team with 4 steals. Gage Martinus grabbed 6 rebounds, Connor Mausolf had 4 assists, while Keegan Hale had 4 deflections and 1 block. Birch Run boys hung tough and fought hard throughout the 64-42 loss to John Glenn on Friday, but couldn't over come John Glenn's size advantage in the paint area. We didn't shoot well either - shooting 29.8% from the floor- (2's and 3's combined).The Panthers trailed by 4 points after the first quarter and at the half (22-18), and by 10 points (42-32) at the end of the third. Birch Run Boys pulled out a close victory 55-52 over visiting Montrose Tuesday.The Panthers started the game hitting on all cylinders on their way to a 17- 9 first quarter lead, and expanded it to a 17 point edge (33-16) by halftime. Montrose started out the second half on a 5 - 0 run and out-scored Birch Run in the 3rd quarter by a 25 to 10 margin. Our shots didn't fall for us as well as they had in the first half, and Birch Run clung to a slim 43-41 advantage over the Rams going into the fourth. It was a battle in the 4th quarter as the score went back and forth before Birch Run's Jaxon Martinus made some clutch free throws in the final minutes to seal the win for the Panthers. Jaxon Martinus led the Panthers with 31 points and 6 steals, while Trent Dalak grabbed a team-high 9 rebounds. Connor Mausolf, Jaxon, and Garett Martinus each had 3 assists. Birch Run Varsity Boys earned a convincing win over visiting Bentley 58-36 Monday in its season opener. The Panthers led 15-10 at the end of the first quarter, and gradually built on that lead through the third quarter when we had a 35-26 advantage.The fourth quarter was a strong one for us as we pulled away to take a 22 point lead (58-36) for the win. Jaxon Martinus paced the Panther's scoring with 25 points and also had 3 assists. Connor Mausolf grabbed a team-high 7 rebounds followed by Christian Stebner who had 6 rebounds.
